Of Mice and Men
Chapter 1
“I’d pet ‘em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead – because they was so little”. pg.10
I see this as a big insight to the mistakes that Lennie has and what kind of person he is. He’s really center on things that are soft and nice to touch so he doesn’t seem to have a sense of what the world is really like. I under stand that he’s mentally disabled but I think that he is to the point of not being capable of living with the rest of society, he is basically a big burley kid how doesn’t know his own strength. He also doesn’t know what is right and what is wrong until after the fact, like the time they were working in Weed he saw a lady with a soft probably a velvet dress he just wanted to feel it but when she asked to for him to let go he only grabbed harder. When got away she went screaming rape and the whole county was out looking for them, they had to hide in a drainage pip till they could get away.
“Well, look. Lennie – if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an’ hide in the brush”. pg. 15
I think this quote about them always needing a place to go and Lennie always getting in to trouble has some troubling meaning to it. I you live a life like that it will catch up to sooner or later and you won’t be able to run away, it’s sad that they have to live a life like that. The only thing that Lennie doesn’t seem to forget is ware to hide if he gets in to trouble. When he dose get in trouble George is the only person he ever listens too. Its bad on Georges behalf because Lennie’s ant tooled George that he e was supposed to take care of Lennie so he fells obligated too. So I think that there luck will soon run out and there will be nothing they can do.
Chapter 2
“Says ‘positively kills lice, roaches, and other scourges.’ What the hell kind of bed you giving us, anyways. We don’t want no pant rabbits”.(pg. 18)
I thought that the slang Steinbeck wrote in gave the story a depth of authenticity to the time it took place, even when he is reading the container.
“He’s my… cousin. I told his old lady I’d take care of him. He got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid… just ain’t bright… Do anything you tell him.” (pg. 22)
I was thinking, is this true but I found out later that it wasn’t. I think to Lennie that it could be with George telling every person he works for the same story. With all these lies the is bound to have someone find out, I see this not ending very well.
“Look, Lennie! This here ain’t no set up. I’m scared. You gonna have trouble with that Curly guy… He figures he got you scarred and he’s gonna take a sock at you the first chance he gets.” (pg. 29)
With Lennie being who he is there is going to be fight, he’s going to make a mistake. I don’t think he’s going to get kicked but is definitely going to make some trouble, he could end up winning the fight witch would force Curly to deny it. This is only the beginning of the end though I think.
Lennie cried out suddenly— “I don’ like this place, George. This ain’t a good place. I wanna get outa here…” (pg. 32) “We gotta keep it till we get a stake. We can’t help it, Lennie.” (pg. 33)
This is what makes me think of a kid intuition, they see to know things before they happen. George should listen to Lennie instead of him listening to George. I feel a sense of for-shadowing when I read these passages, especially with Curly’s wife who seems to be a big temptation for Lennie.
Chapter 3
“Course Lennnie’s a God damn nuisance most of the time… an’ you can’t get rid of him.” (pg. 41)
I like this passage because it gives a good sense of how George really feels about Lennie and he dose care about him there is no doubted buy the end of this chapter. The other thing you get from this chapter is the wantingness of George to open up to people other than Lennie, he desperately needs some one to open up to so Slim and Candy are the best people to do that with.
“Course he ain’t mean. But he gets in trouble alla time because he’s so…dumb. Like what happened in weed…” (pg. 41)
George seems to be making a lot of mistakes, he isn’t as careful with what he tells people anymore which I think is going to back fire on him and Lennie. He lets Slim know what happened in Weed and then with Candy about the place there going to buy. Now with them with there minds on getting this land soon it going to set them off gourd so even more mistakes are going to be mad.
“I’ll… I’ll smash ‘em with a stick.” He subsides, grumbling to him self, threatening the future cats which might dare to disturb the future rabbits. (pg. 58)
This shows how childish Lennie really is; he has no real connection with reality and what is right and isn’t. With George letting go all the secrets I don’t think its going to slip out and everyone is going to know.
“I didn’t wanta,” Lennie cried. “Idodnt wanta hurt him.” (pg. 64)
After this there is diffidently going to be a bad out come, Curly I don’t think is going to keep his mouth shut and the boss is going to ask Slim what happened which is going to led to the boss finding out about Weed. The first time Curly talked to Lennie I knew it was going down hill.
The End
“Come on in. if ever’body’s comin’ in, youmight jush as well.” It was difficult for Crooks to conceal his pleasure with anger. (pg. 75)
I thought it was interesting how Crooks acts like he wants to be alone but really he thinks he’s the loneliest guy on earth. It was interesting how he started to take advantage of Lennie just to show that he had someone even though it bake fired in Crooks. Lennie didn’t really have an understanding of what was being said so he just took affiance to of Crooks and almost hurt him. Its neat how Crooks, Lennie and Candy all come together to talk, all the misfits in all the stories have way of coming together and having a common cause of being wanted and there the only ones that can make them selves feel that way. Its like being with someone that has had the same experiences as you so their the only ones who Know how you feel.
“Well, I ain’t giving no trouble. Think I don’t like to talk to somebody ever’ once in a while? Think I like to stick in that house alla time.” (pg. 77)
I think we all know that she doesn’t want to just talk to people and she is never in the house that we know of. So why dose she just go into Crooks bunk and harass them dose it make her feel better, it sure doesn’t make people like her and these are the guys that would make her the most excepted but she just likes to make everyone feel uncomfortable.
And Carlson said, “Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin’ them two guys.” (pg. 107)
This last line brings it all to gather, with the thought of miss understanding, doing things you don’t really don’t want to. I think this story tells you how people need to be more excepting, it’s a great example of undying friendship, and how the most different of people can come to gather to feel like there wanted.
